Chapter Twenty-One

They found the address in a small lane, sited to the south-east of the village of Docking. A traditional flintstone semi-detached cottage, two up, two down, it mirrored the other property perfectly. A narrow driveway ran down the side of the building, dominated by heavily overgrown foliage and tree growth. The car barely managed to fit onto the drive and allow them both room to get out comfortably. A hatchback was parked at the end of the drive, in front of an old concrete prefabricated garage located to the rear. Even from this distance, the garage appeared somewhat dilapidated. Tamara Greave eyed the front door but the vegetation spreading from the front garden formed an impenetrable barrier and they were unable to reach it. A mixture of wildflowers and spreading ferns, at some stage it must have been a well-tended garden but that was evidently some time ago. The door itself looked like it hadn’t moved in quite some time. The pale blue paint was peeling from the bottom half of the door and coming away further up, blistering in places. At the foot of the door, the lack of protection revealed blackened wood beneath, a sign of wet rot.

The net curtains in the front room of the adjacent property moved, drawing her attention. The windows were closed so it wasn’t symptomatic of the breeze. She tried to see who was behind them but they shrouded the occupant well. Glancing to Janssen, she indicated they should head to the rear. The driveway itself was gravel lined but even this was in the process of being reclaimed by nature.

Rounding the corner to reach the back of the house they found a small kitchen, coal shed and an outside toilet attached to the main building. Judging by the length it probably housed the bathroom towards the back of the kitchen. The garden stretched back but as to how far was difficult to tell for here, too, Mother Nature made her presence felt. In the absence of a bell, Tamara knocked on the edge of the door to the left of the obscured glass. The curtains were drawn and she saw no movement from within. Janssen placed his palm flat on the bonnet of the car, feeling for heat. “It’s cold,” he said. Conn hadn’t been out recently. Checking the time, it was well after midday. She hammered her fist on the door this time, following up by rapping her knuckles on the glass.

Within moments a shadow appeared on the other side, a key turning in the lock. The door cracked open and curious eyes peered out through the gap. Tamara brandished her warrant card. “Mr Collyer?” she asked, he nodded. “Detectives Greave and Janssen, Norfolk Police. May we have a word?” The man nodded once more, opening the door wider. He wasn’t quite what she was expecting, assessing him to be in his mid-forties but the full beard and wild hair made him appear far older than his years. The facial hair extended several inches away from his chin, wispy at the ends and streaked with grey.
